I’m an avid bird photographer and traveler-I’ve been to 40 countries, many with great birds! Because I’m also a classical fan and former performer, I’ve reviewed streaming services that emphasize classical music. I’ve attended trade shows of Microsoft, Google, and Apple and written about all of them and their products. Prior to my current role, I covered software and apps for ExtremeTech, and before that I headed up PCMag’s enterprise software team, but I’m happy to be back in the more accessible realm of consumer software. I was privileged to byline the cover story of the last print issue of PC Magazine, the Windows 7 review, and I’ve witnessed every Microsoft win and misstep up to the latest Windows 11. I’ve been reviewing software for PCMag since 2008, and I still get a kick of seeing what's new in video and photo editing software, and how operating systems change over time. PC hardware is nice, but it’s not much use without innovative software. Delve into the slideshow and linked reviews to see which ones suit your needs. Meanwhile, the sampling of excellent iPad photo apps below will get you off to a great start. We'll be sure to add the best of those as we continue to review the category. More iPad photo apps are showing up regularly in the iTunes App Store. But iPad users, fret not: You can more Instagram-type effects than Instagram itself with either Pixlr-o-matic or Snapseed. While Instagram (free, 3 stars) is the 800-pound gorilla in the room here, that's only optimized for phone interfaces. While Photoshop Touch is more of a specialized pixel-level photo manipulator, the other apps here are more about either getting your photos to look their best or jazz them up with film-like or retro effects. That said, you may be surprised at how much you can to with the iPad version. And some functions, like Liquify, just take more processing horsepower. The far larger screen of a desktop means you have more room for toolbars and option panels. It's no accident that the iPad form of Photoshop contains nowhere near as many functions as its desktop counterpart. And the device's multi-touch interface, while not as suited to fine-detail editing as a mouse or stylus, is used to advantage by the apps in this roundup-the award-winning Snapseed, iPhoto ($4.99, 4 stars), Adobe Photoshop Touch, and the fun Pixlr-o-matic-all make clever use of it. We love seeing these two women together, and looking back on photos of the pair from when Lourdes was a preteen and teenager makes us feel super nostalgic. The young model has inherited some of her mom’s best qualities, including her looks, moxie, and confidence. In fact, while Lourdes was growing up in the spotlight, there were a few moments where she and Madonna have looked more like sisters than mother and daughter. And while Lourdes has already cultivated a rich, eclectic career in modeling, there are still moments where we can’t help but see the spitting image of her mother. The legendary pop star has always been quite protective of her children, but as Lourdes has come into her own, she’s shown the world that she’s ready to introduce herself and pave her own path separate from her iconic mom’s towering career. Madonna welcomed Lourdes, also known by those close to her as “Lola,” with former partner Carlos Leon in October 1996.
